Borecore: The wellness trend we can get behind

4 Min read

Finding the perfect mug. A freshly stocked and organised fridge. Getting into bed with crisp new sheets after a shower. If you’ve caught yourself feeling an unexpected thrill over seemingly small yet essentially ‘boring’ moments, you’re not alone.

The internet has dubbed this appreciation for life’s little pleasures “borecore”. With the rise of #slowliving, and finding the Joy Of Missing Out - could this collective craving for simplicity be one of the healthiest trends yet?

The unexpected Joy of being boring

Our teenage selves would be horrified. The very things we promised we wouldn’t become; excited over meal prepping, warm drinks, and the satisfaction of a declutter session - are now the moments we cherish and look forward to. And what’s more, we’re not just enjoying doing these things ourselves - we’re quietly obsessed with watching others perform them on social media too. ASMR cleaning videos, slow morning routines, methodical organisation clips - these all tap into something deeply soothing for the brain.

That’s because this trend isn’t just about aesthetics or life hacks. It speaks to our fundamental human need for simplicity and wholesomeness in an unpredictable, often chaotic world. So why does borecore feel so good?

The science behind borecore; finding magic in the mundane

In a world overwhelmed by constant progress, distressing headlines, and relentless noise, finding joy in the mundane appears to be a coping mechanism and a subconscious way of rewiring our brains for positivity, helping us to reclaim a sense of control.

Neuroscience supports the idea that small, repeated positive experiences help rewire the brain for happiness. Engaging in simple, mindful activities activates the brain’s reward system, reinforcing neural pathways linked to contentment and emotional resilience. This is known as neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and strengthen positive thought patterns through repetition.

The link between mindfulness and happiness has long been studied. When we consciously engage in day to day activities - a slow-brewed coffee, tidying up, or folding laundry - we are, in fact, practicing mindful awareness. This tiny shift of our focus takes us from stress-inducing rushing and multitasking, to being present with what’s directly in front of us.

Allowing ourselves to relish in these mindful moments on a regular basis has holistic benefits too - from improved sleep, enhanced focus and even supporting digestive health. Research shows that regular mindfulness reduces chronic stress, which can lower the risk of inflammation, heart disease, and anxiety-related disorders.

Rewarding rituals

Our brains also love predictability. Routine and repetition provide a sense of safety and comfort, which helps regulate cortisol (the stress hormone) and support emotional well-being. Completing small, satisfying tasks - like baking bread or the Sunday prep - releases dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with reward, pleasure and motivation. So when it’s weirdly enjoyable to make the bed or complete your skincare routine, essentially the brain is rewarding order, completion and control.

Romanticising the everyday

Finding magic in the mundane goes beyond the satisfaction of a tidy home however. It's also in the act of noticing life happening right in front of your eyes, and appreciating the beauty in everyday moments. Feeling the spring sun on your face after a long winter, watching the stream rising from your first cup of coffee, hearing the birds singing or the way sunlight filters through tree-lined streets. These seemingly small details, when truly noticed, add depth and meaning to daily life. Without them, we can find ourselves constantly craving escape - a holiday, a change of scenery, or a break from the ordinary - when in reality, contentment has been right in front of us all along.

True wellness lies within the ‘boring’

The Ancient + Brave approach to wellness is consistency over complexity. Wellness isn’t about booking yourself onto a retreat once in a while or convoluted protocols you cannot stick to. It’s about the everyday, consistent habits that actually move the needle over time. Although tempting to try the next quick-fix for your health, true well-being is built on ‘boring’ consistency - getting enough fibre, prioritising sleep, getting outdoors, moving your body daily, drinking enough water, and sticking to simple, nourishing rituals.

Wellness may be trending, but the truth is, what actually makes us feel healthy and happy is simple yet deeply wholesome. It’s not in chasing novelty, but in falling in love with repetition.
