The power of red and near-infrared light

The power of red and near-infrared light

3 Min read

At Ancient + Brave, we know that true wellness comes from a balance of inner nourishment and science-backed rituals. While targeted supplementation plays a key role in supporting our health, there are other powerful tools that can elevate health and longevity, and red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation is one of the most exciting frontiers in wellness.

For centuries, our ancestors lived in harmony with natural light, rising and resting with the sun. But modern life has shifted us indoors, away from the full spectrum of light our bodies evolved to rely on. Red and near-infrared light therapy offers a way to reconnect with this ancient wisdom, providing the wavelengths we miss in our daily lives. Unlike ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, which can damage the skin with excessive exposure, red and NIR light are safe and beneficial enhancing cellular function, supporting collagen production, and deep tissue healing.

But how exactly does it work, and how can you integrate it into your wellness routine? Let’s explore the science behind the glow.

The Science Behind Red and Near-Infrared Light Therapy

The body is naturally designed to respond to light. Different wavelengths penetrate the body at varying depths, triggering biological processes that enhance cellular function. Red and NIR light are two of the most researched wavelengths, each with unique yet complementary benefits.

At a cellular level, our mitochondria—the energy powerhouses within each cell—absorb red and near-infrared wavelengths of light. this helps to enhance energy production and drive biological processes associated with healing and the production of our own internal antioxidants.

Red light, typically in the 620nm–750nm range, reaches the dermis—the layer of skin responsible for elasticity and structure. Here it helps stimulate collagen production. Collagen is the scaffolding that keeps skin firm and smooth. As we age, collagen levels naturally decline, leading to fine lines and loss of elasticity. Red light therapy energises fibroblasts (the cells responsible for collagen synthesis), helping to restore skin structure and suppleness.

Red light promotes cellular energy production. By stimulating mitochondria—the energy powerhouses of cells—red light boosts adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. More ATP means better-functioning skin cells and faster repair processes.

Because red light penetrates deep into the skin, it targets inflammation and improves healing of breakouts, helping to promote clearer, more balanced skin.

Near-infrared light (NIR), which is in the 800nm–1,200nm goes even deeper, reaching the hypodermis (the deepest layer of skin) and beyond. Just like red light, NIR light boosts ATP production but works at a greater depth, supporting not just skin health but whole body health.

While invisible to the human eye, its impact is profound, supporting deep tissue repair and recovery. NIR light enhances circulation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the skin and muscles. This speeds up healing, making it an excellent tool for post-workout recovery or skin regeneration.  By reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, NIR light helps skin maintain a healthy glow, making it a powerful tool for skin longevity.

Curate your whole body health ritual

Harnessing the power of red and NIR light is easier than ever, thanks to at-home devices that bring clinical-level treatments to your fingertips. Here’s how to integrate them into your wellness ritual:

  • Face Masks for Skin Rejuvenation: The BON CHARGE Red Light Face Mask delivers both red and near-infrared light directly to the skin, promoting collagen production and enhancing skin vitality. Ideal for targeting fine lines, uneven skin tone, and overall skin health.

  • Full-Body Panels for Recovery: Larger red light panels, such as the Bon Charge Demi or Max are excellent for muscle recovery, reducing inflammation, and improving circulation.

  • Handheld Devices for Targeted Treatment: For spot treatments, a handheld device like the Bon Charge Mini allows you to target specific areas, from injuries to areas of muscle soreness.

All Bon Charge products deliver both near-infrared and infrared light and are also free from harmful EMF Radiation

At Ancient + Brave, we know that true skin health starts from within. While red and NIR light therapy stimulates collagen production externally, nourishing your body with high-quality collagen peptides provides the building blocks needed to maximise results. By stacking your daily Collagen ritual with consistent red and near-infrared light therapy, you can amplify skin renewal, recovery, and resilience for long-term whole-body health.

Elevate Your Self-Care with Science

Wellness isn’t about quick fixes—it’s about creating rituals that stand the test of time. Red and near-infrared light therapy is one of the most powerful tools available to support skin longevity, cellular repair, and whole-body health. Whether you’re looking to enhance beauty, boost recovery, or optimise overall well-being, light therapy, paired with nutrient-rich supplementation, offers a science-backed approach to looking and feeling your best.

So, why not step into the light?
